WHAT WE BUILD TODAY

A free AI agent team you can watch argue, vote and approve its own work, running on your own free API key.

Level: Beginner   Stack: Groq · Gemini · OpenRouter · Runs in your browser

Nine AI agents just argued over a headline, voted, rejected a draft, and approved the rewrite at 8.5/10. Nobody touched the keyboard.

That is an AI agent team in 2026. OpenAI sells one inside ChatGPT. xAI sells one inside Grok. Open-source projects give the parts away for free. And with one free API key, anyone can run a team in a browser tab and watch every message.

So the real question is no longer “should I use AI agents?” It is: rent the team, host it, or own it?

THE 30-SECOND TAKE

  • Rent it: ChatGPT Astra and Grok put agent teams inside paid plans. Easy to start, but the roles are fixed.
  • Host it: open models (Kimi K2.6, Llama, gpt-oss) and open frameworks (LangGraph, CrewAI, Mastra) let you own the whole stack, with some setup.
  • Own it: Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) runs a full agent team in your browser for free, with every message visible.

Read it your way: see the whole picture below, then follow the five steps in order.

1. What an AI Agent Team Actually Is

Ask one chatbot to write, fact-check and edit its own article, and it agrees with itself every time. That is the problem.

An agent team splits the job into roles. Each agent gets one job, one goal and one rule book. They work in parallel, challenge each other, and only then hand back one answer.

Your task

↓

Lead splits the work

↓

Specialists research and draft

↓

Critic attacks the weak spots

↓

Lead approves one final answer

It works. Grok’s agent peer review reportedly cut wrong answers from about 12% to around 4%. More minds checking. Fewer confident mistakes.

In short: an agent team is several AI roles that split, debate and check a task before you see the result.

2. Five Ways to Get an AI Agent Team

GPT-6 Astra: the all-in-one rental

Released: September 3, 2026, as OpenAI’s flagship agent model.

What it does: plans, uses a computer, runs multi-agent workflows and can be steered mid-task. It remembers over 1 million tokens.

How the team works: it hands specialist work to sub-models, like Codex for code.

Cost: included in paid ChatGPT plans.

The team lives inside one model. You get the answer, not the meeting room.

Grok 4.20 Multi-Agent: the built-in debate

The team: four agents by default: a coordinator, a researcher, a logic agent and a contrarian.

How it works: each agent studies the question alone, then they debate and agree on one answer.

Bigger mode: Heavy mode runs 16 agents.

Cost: from $30/month (SuperGrok); the biggest teams need the $300/month Heavy plan.

The built-in contrarian is a smart touch. But xAI picks the roles, not you.

Open models: brains you can own

Example: Kimi K2.6 by Moonshot AI, released April 20, 2026.

Licence: open weights, free for commercial use.

Team power: coordinates up to 300 sub-agents across 4,000 steps.

Others: Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek and OpenAI’s open gpt-oss can fill agent seats too. Groq and OpenRouter host many of them, so no GPU is needed.

Open frameworks: the meeting room as code

A framework is the referee. It decides who speaks, when, and how work moves between agents.

Framework How the team works
LangGraph A graph: agents are steps, arrows decide who goes next. Python and JavaScript.
CrewAI A crew of roles with tasks. Python.
Microsoft Agent Framework Hand-offs and group chat. The successor to AutoGen.
Mastra Workflows with branches and retries. JavaScript first.
OpenAI Agents SDK, Google ADK Hand-offs and sub-agents, both open code.

Custom with Claude: exactly the team you need

Claude and Claude Code turn a plain-English team design into a working app: roles, rules, flow and screen. That is how the Worksmarto team was made. Claude did the building; free models do the thinking.

Infographic: AI agent teams, 3 ways in. Rent it with ChatGPT Astra or Grok, host it with open models and LangGraph or CrewAI, or own it with your free key in the browser
The three paths at a glance: rent, host or own.

In short: Astra and Grok are easy rentals, open source buys freedom, and a BYOK team gives control at almost no cost.

3. BYOK, Explained

BYOK means Bring Your Own Key. Instead of paying a tool every month, you paste your own API key from an AI provider. The tool sends requests with that key, and any bill goes straight to the provider.

Why it fits agent teams: one team run can mean dozens of AI messages. On a subscription tool, someone pays for all of them. With BYOK, free tiers cover it, you can swap models in one dropdown, and open models come included through Groq and OpenRouter.

Key safety rule

A trustworthy BYOK tool sends your key only to the provider and never stores it on its own server. Use a separate key per tool and delete it when you are done.

In short: BYOK turns an AI tool into a free shell. You plug in the brain and pay only for what you use, often nothing.

4. What We Build Today: Worksmarto AI Agent Team

👉 ai-agent-team.worksmarto.com

Watch an AI team work, then build your own. Agents plan, vote, write, review and approve on their own. Every message, task and decision is on screen. After the brief, no human is in the loop.

Worksmarto AI Agent Team round table: Team Lead, Researcher, Headline Writer, Writer, Editor, Fact-checker and Reader passing messages, with the plan and who-approves-what panel
Inside the round table: every handoff, vote and approval is visible.

How to Use It With Your Own Key

Step 1 · Get a free key

From Groq, Google AI Studio (Gemini) or OpenRouter.

Step 2 · Paste and check

Open “Use your own free API key”, paste it, then press “Check key and load models”.

Step 3 · Leave it on Auto

Busy or retired models switch automatically.

Step 4 · Start a run

Watch the team argue, vote and approve.

No key yet? The built-in samples replay for free.

Privacy by design: it runs in your browser. Your key goes straight to the provider and never reaches Worksmarto. No accounts, no tracking cookies, no ads, no saved runs. AI output can still be wrong, so check facts before you use or publish anything.

In short: one free key, a team you can watch live, and nothing stored.

5. Build Your Own: Copy the Prompt

Want a team for your own job? Paste this into Claude:

Copy the agent team prompt
Build a browser-only web app called “My AI Agent Team”.
* Agents: Team Lead, Researcher, Writer, Editor, Fact-checker. Give each a short role prompt and clear powers.
* Flow: Lead plans and assigns → Researcher gives key points → Writer drafts → Editor scores out of 10 → Fact-checker flags claims → up to 2 revision rounds → Lead approves only if the score meets the bar and there are no flags.
* Show every message live as chat bubbles, one colour per agent, plus a task board.
* BYOK: the user picks Groq, Gemini or OpenRouter, pastes a key, and the app loads that key’s live model list. Send the key only to the provider; never store or log it.
* Auto mode: if a model fails or is busy, switch to the next model from the same provider.
* No backend, no accounts, no tracking. Add a privacy page and an “AI output can be wrong” notice.

Swap the roles and the same prompt builds a study group, a product review panel or a code review crew.

New to connecting AI with tools? Start with What Is an MCP Server? and Your First AI Workflow. The road to agent teams began with Building My First No-Code AI Agent and the Worksmarto AI FMM Model.

In short: one prompt and a free key give you a working agent team you can reshape for any job.

WorkSmarto verdict

Worth exploring when: you want several points of view on an idea, plan or draft, fast and free.

Start small: free Groq key → ai-agent-team.worksmarto.com → one task → read the critic’s notes first.

Do not skip: key safety, provider free-tier limits, and checking every fact before acting on it.

Final Thought

Big labs are turning agent teams into a subscription feature. Open source is turning them into free building blocks. BYOK puts those blocks in anyone’s browser.

Rent for ease. Host for freedom. Own for control.
